When should I set up my eSIM — before or during my trip?

Last updated October 14, 2026

Before you fly, at home, over Wi-Fi. Setting it up doesn't start your plan: it starts when you connect to a network in your destination, or on its own 30 days after your eSIM is issued if you haven't connected by then.

Set it up before you fly. The eSIM stays dormant until your plan starts, so setting up early gives you a calm setup at home rather than a stressed one at the airport. There's a common assumption that you set up travel SIMs after you arrive, because that's how physical SIMs worked. eSIMs are different.

Why before-you-fly is better

  • You have Wi-Fi at home — setup needs an internet connection, and home Wi-Fi is more reliable than airport Wi-Fi.

  • You have time — troubleshooting is better handled unhurried.

  • Setting up doesn't start the clock — your plan starts when you connect in your destination, or automatically 30 days after your eSIM is issued if you haven't connected by then.

  • You arrive ready — turn your phone on and the eSIM connects automatically.

You can set up on arrival, but you'll need an internet connection (airport Wi-Fi works but is slower). You can book up to a year ahead; your eSIM is delivered closer to your trip, and setting it up as soon as it arrives is simplest.
